HOW IT BEGINS...

One moment your life is passing normally and the next, your surroundings are dissolving into a multitude of pixels and fragments of light. Anything you were interacting with falls, like you're no longer solid enough to hold it — and people around you make exclamations of surprise that's the last thing you hear as your senses go fuzzy with static.

You find yourself floating quietly in a disorienting, endless dark void. Although whatever you had on you at the time of your last memory is present, things seem... different. Your clothes aren't quite the right texture or colour, weapons don't feel exactly the same when you grip them, and even your body's proportions are just a little different. But most startlingly, in addition to whatever you had on previously, you will find that another item — this one a most precious, treasured thing — is now in your possession... even if you didn't have it with you before.

"Oops," comes a voice, electronically distorted and indistinct, although you cannot see anyone. "It generated a new one. Dump it in the cache with the others and open another support ticket, this is getting out of hand..."

In the very next instant you're waking up in an alley, with a vibrant neon city stretching above and beyond you. The city itself is quite advanced and futuristic with many technological wonders, though it is largely empty. The handful of people that seem to belong there are vacant and too routine, going about their business in never-ending loops. Some won't even acknowledge your presence at all, like they're not made to be interacted with.

You're not sure whether to be relieved or alarmed to discover that there are others just like you, who remember the same dark void and the unidentified voice, only to wake and find themselves in the city too. No one seems to have any answers.

And of course, there are the glitches.

Random instances of things changing without warning: buildings relocate spontaneously, architecture behaves like its got a mind of its own, basic physics stop and start at will, time sometimes doesn't move in linear fashion. And you're not immune to these malfunctions: new abilities appearing, existing ones suddenly not working, memories either questionable or entirely too public for anyone's liking...

Because none of this is real: just an intricate simulation, a computer program that you can neither alter nor end. One that opens the question as to whether you're actually here, if it is only your mind or your body, and what happened to the real you back in your own world?

NOW RUNNING SIMULATION "SVELTE.SGM" v.20.1.79.7

ıllıllı BASIC INFORMATION ıllıllı

OVERVIEW

[community profile] databurst is a panfandom jamjar game set in the computer simulation of a futuristic neon city called Svelte, with themes broadly drawn from sources like The Matrix, Star Ocean, and various cyberpunk series. The setting aesthetic could be summed up as "what if M.C. Escher was obsessed with neon and wrote programming code".

Characters find themselves trapped in the Svelte simulation, where they must deal with a myriad of unique challenges as "code revisions" are introduced which affect their surroundings, their bodies and minds, and cause all sorts of unexpected hijinks. Meanwhile their real world status is unknown, as is the exact nature of how they came to be inside the program. While there is evidence that their physical selves here are nothing more than code-generated avatars, there are also unexplained elements which contradict that...

With minimal power nerfing, characters are free to interact with the ever-changing city in all sorts of ways, creatively or destructively. Even those without extraordinary abilities may find themselves in possession of some from time to time, offering players the opportunity to try all kinds of characters from any kind of background in the setting.

Plot and Pacing

The game is intended to run at a relaxed speed, with a flexible AC that encompasses all types of activity, even TDM participation. While there is a light overarching metaplot, it is not the focus of the game. Events are designed to allow players to thread at their own pace with a focus on CR development. We have done our best to avoid complicated game mechanics, and to set up the game in a way that encourages players to show initiative and direct their own interactions within the setting.

Loosely, the game aims to have one full plot or event, and one mini plot/event each month. These events will range in tone from serious to humorous, providing players a variety of ways to interact with each. While some events will affect the setting as a whole — for example, all the streets become inexplicably sticky — there will be no events in which players are forced to participate in specific ways with no alternative.

The game runs on a 1:1 speed, and there is no set ending at this time.

Game Themes

[community profile] databurst's premise allows the game to embrace a variety of themes through different events and plots. Some will be whimsical and fun, and some will be serious and mysterious. Plots could challenge characters to overcome their fears, to reflect on themselves, to get to know others in ways they hadn't anticipated, to show initiative and explore, or to take charge and lead others. The backdrop of the metaplot is geared toward an uncanny valley and eerie vibe, as characters are introduced to various elements which suggest this simulation is more mysterious than they know...

Regarding mature themes, we do allow adult content here (see the Rules page for more detail on what's allowed) but it is not a central theme of the game. Likewise, although there will be some lighthearted content, this is not a crack game. We will strive to find a balance that appeals to everyone.
